2. Prize competitions, not lotteries
Our competitions are prize competitions under section 14 of the Gambling Act 2005. Winning depends on your skill, knowledge or judgement, which must be used to win a prize. Our competitions are also free to enter by post, as described in Free Postal Entry.
We run three formats, explained in full on How winners are chosen:
- Spot the Ball. You place crosshairs on a match photo with the ball removed. An independent judging panel decides where the ball most likely was. The entry closest to that position wins. There is no random draw.
- Skill Challenge. You put five items in order and give a tie-break estimate. Each entry scores one point for each item in the same position as the independent judges' answer. The highest score wins, and the closest tie-break estimate decides between equal scores. There is no random draw.
- Skill question. You answer a multiple-choice knowledge question. Only correct answers are entered into the draw. The winner is picked from correct entries in accordance with the laws of chance, using a verifiably random and auditable process.
3. Who can enter
You must be aged 18 or over and resident in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland), with a UK postal address. Residents of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and anywhere outside the UK cannot enter. Some people cannot enter, including our staff and their households. The full list is in Rules & Eligibility. We may check your age and identity at any time. Entries from anyone who is not eligible are void.
4. How to enter
- Choose a competition and read its prize details, entry price, maximum entries and closing time.
- For Spot the Ball, place one crosshair for each entry. For the Skill Challenge, set your order and tie-break estimate. For a skill question, choose your answer and the number of entries.
- Check out. You must confirm your date of birth, that you are 18 or over and a UK resident, and that you accept these terms.
- We email you confirmation with your entry numbers (and crosshair coordinates for Spot the Ball). Keep this email.
You can also enter free by post. Postal entries are treated in exactly the same way as paid entries.
The maximum number of entries per person for each competition is shown on the competition page (normally ). Paid and free entries count towards the same maximum. Entries made by automated means, or through multiple accounts, are void.
5. Opening and closing times
Each competition shows its opening and closing time in UK time. Entries received after the closing time are not valid. We will not extend a closing time, reduce a prize, or cancel a competition because of low entry numbers.
A competition may close early only if every available entry has been sold. We will only change a closing time, prize or rule if something outside our reasonable control makes it necessary, and we will tell all entrants by email and on the competition page.
6. How winners are chosen
Spot the Ball
A panel of at least three independent judges with relevant experience studies the photo and agrees where the ball is most likely to have been, using their skill and judgement. The judged position is fixed and recorded before the panel sees any entries. The judged position may differ from where the ball actually was.
Our software measures the straight-line distance between each crosshair and the judged position, to the nearest pixel. The entry with the shortest distance wins. If two or more valid entries are equally close, the prize is shared equally between them: the tied winners each receive an equal share of the cash alternative.
Skill Challenge
The judges' order and the accepted tie-break value are fixed and recorded before the competition opens. After closing, each valid entry scores one point for each item in the same position as the judges' order. The entry with the highest score wins. Between equal scores, the tie-break estimate closest to the accepted value wins. If two or more entries are still tied, the prize is shared equally between them: the tied winners each receive an equal share of the cash alternative.
Ties
Where a tie is shared, we tell every tied winner by email and pay each share within 28 days of all tied winners passing verification. If a tied winner fails verification or doesn't reply in time, their share is divided equally between the remaining tied winners.
Skill question
Each question is set to need genuine knowledge, so that a significant proportion of people would be prevented from winning. Incorrect answers are not entered into the draw and are not refunded. One winner is drawn at random from all correct entries, paid and free, using a certified random number generator, or under the supervision of an independent person. Prizes are awarded in accordance with the laws of chance. Each correct entry has an equal chance of winning.
Publishing the result
Judging and draws take place at UK time unless the competition page says otherwise, and are recorded. For Spot the Ball we publish the judged position after judging.
7. Your chances of winning
Each competition page shows the maximum number of entries and how many have been sold, so you can see your chances before you enter. For a skill question competition, if every entry is sold and every answer is correct, your chance of winning is the number of correct entries you hold divided by the maximum number of entries. Your chance depends on how many correct entries are received. In Spot the Ball, the winner is decided by accuracy, not chance.
8. Prizes
- The prize is as described on the competition page. Images may be illustrative. Prize values are the recommended retail price on the date the competition opens.
- Where a cash alternative is shown, the winner can choose it instead of the prize.
- Prizes are not transferable. If a prize becomes unavailable for reasons outside our control, we will provide a prize of equal or greater value, or the cash alternative.
- We aim to deliver prizes within 28 days of a winner passing verification. Vehicle prizes include delivery to a UK mainland address. The winner is responsible for insurance, road tax, a valid driving licence and running costs.
- Prizes are never reduced in value or withdrawn because of low entry numbers.
9. Winner contact and checks
We notify the winner by email within 24 hours of the result, and may also call. Please check your spam folder. The winner must reply within 14 days. Before a prize is awarded, the winner must provide photo ID (passport or driving licence) and proof of address so we can confirm their age, identity and eligibility.
If a winner cannot be contacted, does not reply within 14 days, fails verification or has broken these terms, their entry is void. For Spot the Ball and the Skill Challenge the prize goes to the next best eligible entry. For a skill question, a new winner is drawn from the remaining correct entries.
10. Publishing winners
To show that prizes are genuinely awarded, we publish each winner's first name and county on our Winners section. Photos and video are only used if the winner agrees. If you object to your details being published, tell us. We may still have to give them to the Advertising Standards Authority if asked.
11. Payment, limits and refunds
Entry prices are shown in pounds sterling and include any VAT. Payment is taken when you check out. Credit card payments are limited to per person per month. Every account has a monthly spending limit, which you can lower (including to £0) on Safer Play & Limits.
You can ask for a refund within 24 hours of payment, as long as the competition has not closed. After that, or once the competition closes and entries are filed for judging, entries can't be refunded except as set out in our Refund Policy. Incorrect answers are not refunded.
12. Disqualification
We may void entries, close accounts and withhold prizes if we reasonably believe someone has entered while ineligible, used false details, used more than one account, used software or bots, tried to exceed the entry limit, or acted fraudulently. We will refund paid entries where the law requires it.
13. If a competition is cancelled
We will only cancel a competition for reasons outside our reasonable control, such as a legal or regulatory requirement. If we do, we will refund all paid entries in full to the original payment method within 14 days and tell all entrants.
14. Our liability
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected. We are not responsible for entries lost, delayed or damaged in the post, or for technical faults outside our reasonable control, but we will refund any entry that we accepted payment for and could not process because of a fault on our side.
15. Complaints
If something goes wrong, contact us first. Our full process is on Support & Complaints. We follow the DCMS Voluntary Code of Good Practice for Prize Draw Operators. If you have followed our process and believe we have not met the Code, you can contact DCMS at prizedrawcode@dcms.gov.uk.
16. Governing law
These terms, and any dispute or claim arising from them or from a competition, are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts, and the mandatory consumer protections of that part of the UK still apply.
We handle your personal data under the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018, as explained in our Privacy Policy.
